NAME: Mary-Anne NICKNAME(S): Anne AGE: 24 GENDER: Female SPECIES: Human
PARENTS: Logan Marshall [deceased at 34] and Rebecca Stevens [deceased at 29]. SIBLINGS: Andrew Marshall [27; whereabouts unknown].
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Standing at about 5'6'', Anne is of average height with an athletic build obtained from years of physical training. Being unfit would not help her if she needed to move quickly. Anne's hair is long, wavy, and warm chocolate brown, and she rarely bothers to style it. Instead, she'll either leave it down or tie it in a simple ponytail. Her eyes are dark green, framed by fair skin and dark brows. Usually she just wears jeans or slacks with a simple tank or t-shirt--she despises dresses and finds no use for them. Anne's face is extremely expressive, which makes her emotions nearly impossible to hide (not that she often wants to hide them).
Anne has a scar on the back of her right shoulder, gained in childhood when she and her companions had a close call while on the run. The scare is plain with no distinct shape, but is quite noticeable when she wears tank shirts.
PERSONALITY: The wheels in Anne's head are constantly turning. She is always thinking, always analyzing, always wondering. She perceives people quite well and is quite talented at judging emotions by evaluating facial expressions or body posture. Like almost every other human, Anne despises Vecromarks. In fact, she spends most of her time plotting against them. But when it comes to humans, Anne is... civil. She definitely has a temper, but tries extremely hard to keep it controlled. She acknowledges that in her past there have been things that affect who she is today--bad things--but she does her best to make sure she doesn't take her issues out on others; she refuses to use that as an excuse. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work. Despite not doing so intentionally, Anne tends to come off as gruff and cold, usually regretting so later. She is generally quiet, especially around those she doesn't trust or know.
HISTORY: Yeah, so she watched her parents die when she was only three. But as far as Anne is concerned, she has no right to use that as an excuse for her actions. After all, it's not like her story is unique; her parents died in the beginning of the invasion, just like millions of others. Maybe not all the other children had to watch, but certainly there were those who did.
Andrew had always talked about aliens being out there, but as the annoying older brother, not as a true believer. Being only a small toddler, Anne had barely understood the concept; she simply grasped the idea that there were strangers in the universe that wanted to attack little girls like her. And since she didn't realize her brother was joking, she wasn't surprised when they finally came--she was just scared out of her wits. It didn't help that the aliens came into their house one night and murdered the parents while Andrew and Anne hid silently in the closet.
The orphaned children were taken in by their neighbor, a man who hated most children but refused to leave his small neighbors to die. The headed north in the hopes of simply outrunning the aliens, but when it became obvious that this was impossible, the three simply began hiding. They spent a lot of time in abandoned houses or even just on the streets, survival taking priority over comfort. Eventually, they realized they were not alone, and were able to join forces with other homeless families before finally, they all decided to stop running. After a few years, the slaughter had mostly ended as the Vecromarks had established dominance, and the survivors were able to set up something resembling a normal life. The neighbor, Nicolas, began working with other adults to form the basis of a rebel group. It started off sloppy, with a group of humans dragging stray Vecromarks into dark corners and killing them. But eventually they got more organized; they plotted relentlessly, refusing to sit back and watch, knowing it was entirely possible the slaughter would start again.
When Andrew was 20, he decided it was time to leave. Although he never really gave a reason as to why, Anne accepted and understood without needing it. He was her brother and she knew him, and if he felt it was time for him to go off alone and find himself, then it must be time for him to go. Nobody made Andy do anything he didn't already want to do.
Anne decided not to go with him. She had already set up a steady situation, not to mention she was afraid to leave the life she knew. Even if it wasn't a great one, even if she could do better, it was what was familiar--and familiarity was something she desperately needed. She worked alongside Nicolas until he went missing as most of the adults had. Eventually the ones left were either young, around her age, or barely involved in the movement. Anne established connections, both with her fellow humans and even a few Vecromarks who chose to betray their own.
